An extra farmers market will happen in July after two markets this season were canceled due to rain.
Regular farmers market dates for the rest of the season are from 5:30 to 8 p.m. most Tuesdays at Village Green: July 1, 15, 22, 29; Aug. 5, 19, 26; and Sept. 2, 16, 23 and 30.
Assistant Parks and Rec Director Jimmy Kegin said they previously weren’t having farmers markets on the Tuesdays that fell during the same week as Main Street Markets, which are the second Thursday of each month.
“We’ve been skipping those days so we don’t step on their toes,” Kegin said. “Whenever Main Street is, we won’t host.”
However, to make up for the rained-out events, there will be a farmers market on July 8 as well.
Kegin said the markets use the same lightning guidelines as the pool. He doesn’t foresee having to cancel future markets for heat, since farmers are used to it, he said.
Kegin’s main priority is growing the market this summer to have more vendors, saying the Lawrence farmers market is his inspiration.
This week’s market had eight vendors and live music. Vendor Laurel Eastling of Tree Line Creations was glad last week’s market was canceled due to safety concerns of lightning and metal tents. Customers likely wouldn’t come if there was rain even if it was only for part of the market, she said.
Vendor Debby Myers of Myers Family Farm and Garden said the canceled markets did not have an impact on business.
“You’re going to have storms. It’s going to be hot,” she said. “You prepare as best you can.”
