Eudora wouldn’t allow an undefeated Spring Hill football team to spoil senior night en route to the postseason.
The Cardinals brought intensity on offense and defense throughout the game. Sophomore Adrion Seals hauled in two touchdown catches, including one for 80 yards. Junior Kale Hammerschmidt and junior Octavious Lyles each recorded an interception with Lyles returning his 45 yards for a touchdown.
Seals recorded the first score of the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass from senior Gage Hayden to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. The Eudora student section loved what they saw as they broke into “we love Adrion” chants immediately after the score.
“We had a talk before the game, you know, we were going to do this one for coach,” Seals said. “That just really motivated all of us, and I told all the seniors that I’m gonna do it for them, I’m gonna leave it all out for them.”
Gage Hayden scored the second touchdown of the night on a 53-yard run to take a 14-0 lead with 2:42 left in the first. Seals added his second touchdown catch and senior running back Brayden Beerbower punched in a 4-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to end the first half with a 26-0 lead.
Head coach Sean Hayden said his team finally began to buy into the formula of removing outside noises and focusing on what they do well.
“We can play with anybody. I don’t care who it is,” he said. “We can play with anybody if we do what we do well and keep grinding, keep going four or five yards a carry, and then throwing it deep whenever they let us. It doesn’t happen every time, it only happens when they let us.”
Spring Hill managed to get within scoring position at the Cardinal’s 8-yard line, but Hammerschmidt’s interception ended one of their most successful drives of the game. Spring Hill eventually got on the board with a rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t manufacture any meaningful offense the rest of the game.
Eudora ends its regular season 4-4. They will face Ottawa (2-6) on Friday. Time and place TBD.
