Eudora residents should be allowed to have front yard decorative fences up to 4-feet high, the Planning Commission decided Wednesday.

Eudora’s fence regulations now limit the height of front yard fences to 3 feet, with the new proposal allowing for another foot of height.

The proposed amendment states that front yard fences should have at least 40 percent transparency, like a split-rail, picket or wrought iron design. This amendment prohibits chain-link fences and barbed or razor wire fences in front yards.

Codes Administrator Curt Baumann said a lot of residents had brought this to his attention before due to the lack of 3-foot pickets at surrounding hardware stores.  

“This would meet the intention of not having a privacy fence in the front yard and would improve the appearance of the neighborhood,” Baumann said. 

The proposed amendment passed unanimously. The proposal will next go to the City Commission for final approval. 

A permit to install or modify a fence should be obtained from the city.
