Residents will have the chance to learn more about the historic Beni Israel Cemetery during an informational tour.
The tour will include history of the Jewish immigrants who came to the area and their early influence in the founding of the city. The cemetery was established in 1858.
David Katzman, a KU professor emeritus of American and Jewish studies, will also share history and mysteries that are still unanswered. The event is being put on by the Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation.
Upgrades for the cemetery are funded by a cultural heritage grant from Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council. To read more about those upgrades, read the story here.
The tour will begin at 4 p.m. and go until 5:30 p.m. Sept. 22. The cemetery’s address is 1301 E. 2100 Road.
All are welcome but asked to register here.
