Junior Cardinals golfer Joellen Vogt finished round one of the state tournament in eighth after shooting a 90 on Monday.
Vogt said the round wasn’t her greatest performance, but the wind and cold weather made it tough for all the golfers. Vogt said she had to make several adjustments to counter the wind, especially when she was teeing off.
“You need the ball to stay low, and it just cut through the wind and kept going up,” she said about her tee shots. “And if it goes up, it just stops and drops. So, I had to use some clubs that I probably wouldn’t use for the shot I was taking, and then I had to tee my ball even lower.”
Head coach Susan DeVoe said the weather affected Vogt’s putting as well.
“On some of her putts, she was adjusting for the wind, and I told her that on short putts you really do not have to adjust for the wind,” DeVoe said. “On longer putts maybe, depending if it’s uphill or downhill, so I think it’s just tweaking that a little and she’ll be OK tomorrow.”
While the coldness played a role in how the first round went, DeVoe said she thinks Vogt will be better prepared for even colder weather Tuesday.
“It’s just dealing with some conditions that, you know, it’s been a long time,” she said. “So, it’s mostly just reminding her, ‘Hey, just hit the ball, and swing like you swing, and you’ll be fine.’”
Vogt will tee off for round two at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday.
