After another cold day on the course, junior Cardinals golfer Joellen Vogt shot an 87 Tuesday to place eighth overall at the state tournament.
Head coach Susan DeVoe said the cold weather in Emporia affected all the golfers again Tuesday. DeVoe said the golfers just are not used to playing in such cold temperatures, but that Vogt should be proud of her finish considering the conditions.
“A top 10 finish is good for the weather,” DeVoe said. “It was a mighty cold day. And I know she didn’t play as well as she wanted, but a top 10 finish is good.”
Freshman Addison Douglass from Wamego High School came in first place.
Vogt said putting was a struggle for her, something she had some trouble with Monday as well.
“The ground was cold, so the ball would roll farther than it was supposed to,” she said. “So, it was harder to get the right speed. I tried to just hit it softer than I normally would.”
DeVoe said Vogt had to four-putt one hole even though she reached the green in two strokes. DeVoe also said it may be time for Vogt to get a new putter as she has been using the same one since she was 4 years old.
“Her putter was really her downfall over the last two days,” DeVoe said. “But, she still has next year. So, maybe she’ll get a new putter, and we’ll be better next year.”
While things didn’t go exactly as she had hoped, Vogt said the tournament still turned out OK and that she learned that she has to control only what she can control.
“I just have to stay with myself and not worry about how anybody else is doing because they don’t control how I play,” Vogt said.
DeVoe said she hopes Vogt comes into next year with a little chip on her shoulder that will motivate her.
“Overall, she had a good tournament,” she said. “There were lots of teachable moments that she will learn from, and that’s a good thing.”
