Eudora residents can party with Dr. Seuss, sign up to get their yard egged and put their trivia skills to use at various community events coming up this spring.
The library is hosting a Dr. Seuss party for kindergarten through fifth graders from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday in honor of the children’s author’s birthday.
The party is a way to commemorate him and his books, children’s librarian Montana Frehe said. The event will have a Dr. Seuss movie, craft and food.
“It’s a way to bring eyes to the library in a good way for these kids and that they can utilize all the stuff here,” Frehe said.
The link to register is on the library’s events page. The library encourages signing up to ensure enough food and materials.
The Eudora Lions Club has begun a new tradition, the Egg My Yard fundraiser. The night before Easter, Lions will sprinkle candy-filled Easter eggs in your yard to raise money for their community service projects.
Eudora residents can purchase eggs in increments of two dozen, with up to 96 eggs total. For 24 eggs, it is $30. The Lions will fill the eggs with Skittles and Starbursts to avoid many common allergens.
The deadline to order and pay for eggs is March 4 to ensure the club can get supplies in time for Easter. Orders are limited to Eudora city limits and people are allowed to purchase the service for only their own yard. This will ensure the police department is aware of the project in case of any calls.
The club has had 11 houses sign up so far.
Amanda Brunkow signed up for the service to support the community after seeing a post on Facebook. Brunkow saw the opportunity to have a stress-free Easter morning while helping the Lions since they are a “staple in Eudora.”
“Being a busy mom of two children, I thought, well, that sounds like a good idea, a time saver for me, and a stress relief,” Brunkow said. “It sounds like a great idea for someone to do that for us.”
The idea came from a Lawrence nonprofit that had done the fundraiser in the past, Lions secretary Eric Strimple said. But this is the first time it has been done in Eudora, he said.
“It’s a way to have fun in the community with the community,” Strimple said.
Prior to the pandemic, the club’s spring fundraiser had been a hot dog booth at the Parks and Rec’s community Easter egg hunt. Strimple thought it was time to revamp the fundraiser.
This year, money earned from the project will fund community service projects, such as buying glasses for people who need them, sending diabetic children to camps, scholarships for band camps or planting trees in parks, Strimple said. In future years, the money from Egg My Yard will be used for a specific cause.
“When people donate to the Lions Club, 100% of the profits are given back to the community or natural disasters,” Strimple said. “There are a lot of things Lions are involved in that people may not know.”
If people have questions about the service, they should reach out to the Eudora Lions Club Facebook page. If community members are interested in signing up, there is a QR code on the attached flyer.
The All Night Prom Committee is hosting a trivia night from 6 to 10 p.m. March 26 at Holy Family Catholic Church. The night will be a way for the committee to raise money for the high school All Night Prom event.
Anyone 21 and older can sign up and participate in the fundraiser even if they do not have a connection to the high school, committee member Crystal Meier said. The event was a hit two years ago.
“We had a really good time with it,” Meier said. “So, we thought we’d carry it on.”
The teams can consist of eight people and will be $50 a player. The event will include Barbwire Barbecue, drinks, and a cash prize for first place.
Team sign-ups will end March 19. Those interested in signing up can send the registration form and payment to PO Box 353 in Eudora or use the Google form link on Facebook.
