Eudora voters have decided against a new library.
Almost 55% of those who cast a vote in the special election voted no. Complete but unofficial election results show 986 voted no and 825 voted yes out of 1,811 ballots cast.
About 37% of eligible voters cast a ballot in the election.
County Clerk Jamie Shew said there are seven provisional ballots, so the final canvass will likely not alter the final election results from Tuesday’s unofficial count.
This will halt plans the New Library Capital Campaign had for a new $4.6 million library, which would have been constructed across the street from the current library.
Those who did not favor the new library expressed concerns about the cost and increase in taxes.
The campaign for a new library has been years in the making, and the library board held several discussions with the Eudora community in the past year, and also presented plans for the library in front of the City Commission. Previous Eudora Times coverage detailed various aspects of the library campaign.
The Board of Canvassers will convene at 9 a.m. March 14 at 711 W. 23rd St. in Lawrence. This final count will be open for the public to view. This canvass will include any remaining provisional ballots.
