After being notified of a change in their property’s value, Eudora residents may be wondering what next steps to take.
The Douglas County Appraiser’s office mailed property owners change of value notices last month. If anyone wishes to contest any change, an appeal request must be filled out on the back of the notice and returned to the appraiser’s office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.
This request will lead to an informal meeting with the appraiser’s office. These meetings began the week of March 21 and occur on the phone. Property owners will be notified of their meeting time beforehand.
Eudora City Manager Barack Matite said residents may be confused about their change of value notices, and what that will really mean for them and their tax rate.
“We are going to do our part to try to inform residents what’s going on,” Matite said. “We want to make sure they know it’s from the county.”
Matite said further information will be available for residents around June or July, as he said that’s when his office’s budget process begins. He added that it’s too early to tell how much residents’ taxes will be affected.
The county’s newsletter provided the total real estate assessed for 2022 at $1.6 billion. This is $200 million more than last year’s assessment, about a 14% increase.
In 2021, residential property’s assessed value was a little over $1 billion, while 2022’s assessed value was $1.1 billion, about a 16% increase.
