
Senior Colton Jenkins is a commended student in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 34,000 high schoolers across the country were recognized as commended students this year for their outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college.
Earlier this year, Jenkins placed sixth in a national high school technical drafting competition.
Applications open for service academies
Applications are now open for Kansas students seeking nominations to attend the United States military service academies for the Class of 2030.
Every year, representatives from Congress can nominate a limited number of candidates for West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, between 17 and 23 years old, unmarried and without dependents. Applications must be submitted to Rep. Derek Schmidt, R-Kansas, by Oct. 15. The application and more information can be found on Schmidt’s website.

Pet news could include announcement of a new pet or an obituary for a pet. The cost of these various announcements will be $10 each. The fee is to support personnel who must prepare this information for publication.
