The Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation will lead a public historical tour of Eudora’s Beni Israel Cemetery on Sept. 7.
Founded in 1858 by settlers, the cemetery sits at 1301 E. 2100 Road and is one of only two Jewish burial grounds from Kansas’ pre-statehood territorial era. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013, it is the last remaining trace of the Jewish community that helped establish Eudora.
David Katzman, KU professor emeritus of American and Jewish studies, will share the history of the site and stories of those buried there.
The Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation has maintained the cemetery since 1978. Recent accessibility improvements were funded through a 2024 Douglas County Historical Commission grant.
The tour is open to the public, but advance registration is requested.
