City commissioners heard a request Monday night to improve accessibility at the Rec Center.
Senior Foundation of Eudora board member Annie Bryant spoke during public comment asking the commission to consider installing ADA compliant doors at the north doors of the Rec Center. Bryant said updates to these doors would allow more people to come to the center, and also more seniors to come to foundation events. She asked that the bathroom main doors also be updated to be ADA compliant.
“Medical equipment from crutches to walkers to wheelchairs and scooters pose difficulty gaining access to that building. It is my hope the commission will consider making the north entrance ADA compliant and handicap accessible,” she said.
Mayor Tim Reazin said later in the meeting that he would like to see the Parks and Rec Department get a quick quote before the budget is wrapped up. He said he wasn’t aware of this issue but appreciated Bryant bringing it to their attention.
Commissioner Alex Curnes said he agreed that it sounded like an important thing for the city to look into.
During commission and staff comments, Reazin said he would like to see another push to get people to apply for the property tax relief for seniors and disabled veterans.
Gentry said he would help sign people up and that the foundation could send people to him for questions. He said they have funding for about 13 more people.
Low-income residents 65 and older and disabled veterans are able to apply for assistance for the city portion of their property tax bill.
The property tax relief program for Eudora was inspired by a similar program that started in 2024 in De Soto. This year, qualifying residents will be able to apply for up to $500 off their bill.
Those eligible can contact City Hall to learn more on how to apply.
