A new scam is claiming to be the Douglas County Senior Resource Center and trying to sell fake burial plots.
Executive Director Megan Poindexter is warning residents to be on the lookout for scammers, and most importantly remember the resource center never sells anything, she said.
Poindexter said although they’ve only heard of one confirmed report of the scam being used, it is likely more widespread.
The resident received a couple of calls from the scammer, she said.
Down the road, if someone uses the Senior Resource Center’s name to sell anything else, for example medical equipment, it would be an automatic tip-off to a scam because there is never anything for sale at the center, she said.
If a person thinks they may have already been scammed, reporting it to your bank is always a good first step, she said. If you think a scammer tried to reach you but you did not buy the claim, you can report it to the Kansas Protection Report Center hotline at 1-800-922-5330.
Oftentimes, scammers emphasize a need for urgency or one claiming to have a warrant for your arrest, she said. It can be a good way to decipher what scams are, she said. They are oftentimes also targeting older people, she said.
After receiving a potential scam call, it’s important to stop and think about it and not do anything in a state of panic, she said.
“The big takeaway at least from the Senior Resource Center perspective is that, yes, the Senior Resource Center does not sell anything, so if someone calls and tells you they’re selling on our behalf or from our office, it is a scam. You can just be rest-assured,” Poindexter said.
