The community helped raise 2,800 food items during the 38th annual Scouting for Food event this past week.
Members of Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, the Methodist church and others helped drop fliers at every door in Eudora letting people know they would come back to pick up any donated items from their porches last Saturday.
These non-perishable items go to the Eudora Food Pantry, which is always in need of more items leading up to summer when they see the highest need.
Need at the pantry has remained high since COVID-19, and pantry organizer Marsha Gordon said that collecting this many items is the sign of a successful community event.
Gordon said the pantry also received $300 in cash.
The combination of food items and the monetary donations will provide about 5 weeks of items for the residents using the pantry, she said.
An event like this reaffirms the generosity of Eudora’s residents. By leaving the fliers on doors, it also gives visibility to the food pantry and allows people to easily donate on their doorstep.
“So I really feel like Eudora has a real giving spirit. I see that all the time, whether it’s a food drive or not,” Gordon said.
By having youth involved in the event, it also plants seeds about how important service to others is.
“I just want to thank the community for once again, showing their support for our neighbors that could use a helping hand,” she said.
