This year’s prom theme is Light Up the Night, inspired by the movie “Tangled,” with lanterns and purple accents to match the movie’s atmosphere.
Malia Dietz, a Student Council representative, is looking forward to the theme because of the opportunities it will offer for fun lighting. Having the event at KU’s DeBruce Center gives them the ability to make the dance feel like their own, she said.
For seniors like Dietz, this is the last time to dress up and go to a dance with a big group of her best friends. She thinks the theme will help create a magical atmosphere for their last high school dance, she said.
To start this year’s events, the red carpet will be rolled down Main Street in front of CPA Park for attendees to take professional pictures with dates or friends. The red carpet will go from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 12. The dance will follow from 8 to 11 p.m. at the DeBruce Center.
If students are still looking for dresses, Anchored Collective has been collecting them to offer at no cost. Students can come pick out, drop off or swap dresses between 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday, April 5.
Anchored Collective at 710 Main St. has collected over 70 dresses from members of the community.
Voting on prom court began today (Friday). The five boys and five girls will be announced Monday. The final vote for king and queen will be next Friday with winners announced at 10 p.m. on prom night.
After prom, students are encouraged to attend All Night Prom to stay safe and discourage students from drinking. Students will be locked in from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the middle school. There will be food, games, raffles and inflatables.
Students have until midnight to enter the middle school, but if students want to leave before the morning, parents are called to let them know and prizes are forfeited.
There will be games like giant Jenga, Connect Four, poker, roulette and a cash cube where students have to grab real and fake money blowing through the air, organizer Brandi McCormick said.
In the gym, there will be many inflatables, one of which will be a large obstacle course.
New food will be put out every hour during the event.
There will be prizes for both seniors and juniors throughout the night. Students receive tickets and get to put them in for different raffle items. These include dorm, electronic, personal care, outdoors and household items.
There will be an estimated $3,000 in gift cards available for prizes as well, she said.
“This is something that Eudora has been doing for tens of years, and I feel like it’s a staple for Eudora,” she said.
