Construction will soon begin to renovate a rundown Main Street building after city commissioners approved a contract Tuesday.
During a special meeting, the commission approved a construction contract submitted by Accessibility Solutions in Lawrence with a bid of $393,000.
The state Commerce Department awarded the city a grant of $250,000 to go toward construction to rehabilitate the building at 714 Main St. The city is under no financial obligation for any of the project costs but needed to approve a contract for the project to move forward.
When construction is finished, four commercial spaces will be available for rent within the property, said GW Weld, who owns the property and has committed to paying costs beyond the grant. Construction needs to be finished by next fall.
