The Eudora girls golf team is off to a strong start this year.
Girls golf coach Susan DeVoe wants to see the entire team score low enough to make it to state this year.
Now in their second season, the Lady Cardinals started the year with two top-two finishes in their first three tournaments. The team is young, so building a foundation is a goal this year, DeVoe said.
Sophomore Joellen Vogt, who won third in the team’s last tournament at the HGC girls golf fall preview earlier this week in Hesston, is one of the team’s leaders. Last season, Vogt finished in the top 20 at the state tournament.
She puts a lot of stress on herself and wants to loosen up this year so she can get comfortable on the golf course come crunch time.
“Last year I didn’t really have fun because I was worried about compete, compete, compete,” Vogt said. “I want to have more fun with it.”
Senior Katy Pope has the same mentality.
“I’m not really going for anything specific, just to have a good time,” said Pope, who earned an eighth-place medal at Hesston.
The girls took second place at the first tournament of the year at Ottawa, led by Vogt with a team low of 42 strokes. They then won the next tournament at Jefferson West during an 18-hole, two-player scramble.
Double medals went to Vogt and Brooklyn Thorne who took second, while Pope and Bree Gabel placed fourth overall.
Team success is a large focus for DeVoe and trying to put all of her players in the best position to win as a team.
The team’s next action will be a varsity tournament Tuesday hosted by Santa Fe Trail at Lamont Hill Golf Club.
