Douglas County will begin vaccinating 12- to 15-year-olds at the end of this week pending federal approval on Wednesday.
Douglas County will begin administering the Pfizer vaccine to residents 12 to 15 years old within days, pending a final federal approval Wednesday to expand the vaccine’s use.
If approved, Communications Officer George Diepenbrock said the Lawrence Douglas County Public Health Department will likely start offering appointments at the end of the week.
All providers offering the Pfizer vaccine will be eligible to offer it to 12- to 15-year-old residents in the county. Parents or guardians must authorize all vaccinations for this age group, which can be done in advance by filling out the county’s consent form.
Diepenbrock said announcements for additional public clinics and providers for this age group will be shared through the department’s social media. Codes for vaccination appointments will also be posted to LDCPH’s website.
Diepenbrock said the department anticipates high demand for this age group in Douglas County if vaccination is approved.
“We expect there will be quite a bit of interest once this gets approved in the community,” he said. “Full vaccination will help our community continue to move forward and protect people against COVID.”
On Tuesday, public health administered 57 first doses and 194 second doses during a vaccine clinic at LMH Health. As of Monday, there were 191 active COVID-19 cases in Douglas County.
