Flint development co-founders, along with its partners, members from Panasonic and city staff, broke ground Wednesday morning on the new 1 million-square-foot commercial building on the corner of Edgerton Road and 103rd Street.
The first commercial building is now underway in De Soto at the 370-acre Flint Commerce Center.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place Wednesday morning with Flint Development co-founders, Flint Commerce Center partners, members from Panasonic and De Soto city staff in attendance.
The new building, called Building C, on Edgerton Road and 103rd Street will be over 1 million square feet.
Panasonic will lease approximately half of the commercial space as part of its supply chain. The Panasonic plant will be about a mile away from this building on 103rd Street.
The building is expected to be completed in July. It will have 254 car parking stalls, 251 trailer parking stalls and 50 dock doors. As of now, more than 500,000 square footage is available to lease.
Contegra Construction is the general contractor for the project. Davidson Architecture and Engineering designed the building layout. Both companies are partners with Flint Development.
“This is a really exciting day for all of us,” Flint Development co-founder Hunter Harris said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Harris thanked the city and Commerce Center partners for the opportunity to expand economic development. Flint Development recently acquired nearly 100 acres of land in De Soto for additional development opportunities on the residential front, Harris said.
“I’m excited that we got the first building coming out of the ground,” Mayor Rick Walker said. “We started down this path 18 months ago or so, and with this vision in mind, I’m glad to see that it’s finally here.”
The partnership between the city and Flint Development benefits both parties as it will create jobs, create opportunity, broaden the town’s tax base, generate revenue and help De Soto revitalize its community, Walker said in his speech.
“While the benefits we might not see immediately for everything, the next generation is going to really benefit from the actions that we’re taking right now,” Walker said.
