About 97 acres next to the high school will likely provide new housing options for Eudora’s future growth.
The City Commission approved the annexation of the land into city limits at Monday’s meeting.
The land is owned by Judy Meiergerd. In an interview last week, Meiergerd said she and her husband Don decided it was time to sell the land after real estate developers had been contacting them for several years.
“We decided that we couldn’t take care of it very well being in Wichita, Kansas, and our children, you know, they didn’t particularly want to. We hated to hand it over to them to have to take care of living in Wichita,” Meiergerd said.
The land has been in the family for about 150 years, passing down from her grandfather to her father and now to her.
Meiergerd previously sold some of the family land to the school district for the new high school.
The Meiergerds were approached by Roger Johnson, a partner with Alcove Development, and heard they had a good reputation in Eudora.
“Next would be any request to rezone but right now, it will just fall into the category of AG 1 county zoning,” City Manager Kevyn Gero said.
In an interview last week, Alcove Development partner Dustin Baker said the development will be a continuation of the style of Shadow Ridge, a project Alcove worked on.
Alcove has also worked on Homestead of Eudora and projects in De Soto and Lawrence. Baker said they are familiar with the community and wanted to do something of quality for the area.
“We kind of felt like this is our home turf,” Baker said.
Mayor Tim Reazin said that the potential realignment of Church Street is something he wanted to note and everyone has been made aware of these possible changes.
“I just would like to thank the Meiergerds and both Roger and Dustin for working through this process. It’s something that the community’s needing, and I’m glad that they were able to come to an agreement with the process,” Reazin said.
In other business, Gero said the Village Green ribbon cutting event at 6 p.m. Saturday. Gero also introduced Zack Daniel, the new assistant city manager, to the commission.
Police Chief Wes Lovett said the department will host Cones with a Cop from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dairy Queen for early dismissal.
