The police department will begin the process of getting a new squad car after Monday’s City Commission meeting.
The City Commission approved the pre-authorization to purchase a vehicle to replace one that was removed from the fleet when the additional school resource officer went to the elementary school.
“The reason we do this obviously is because it’s very difficult to find one and once you do, it’s usually gone in a day or two, so it’s nice to have authorization ahead of time,” Police Chief Wes Lovett said.
The majority of the money for the purchase will come from the school district’s reimbursement for the vehicle and other associated costs, but the 2023 budget also included $61,000 in capital outlay for a new vehicle.
The cost is not to exceed $50,000, and was included in the original budget plans for this year.
In other business, the City Commission congratulated graduates of the Citizens Academy. Assistant City Manager Zack Daniel said 17 people participated and got to see how all the departments run.
Mayor Tim Reazin thanked the city staff for their hard work on the programming.
“It’s one of the things that we’ve talked about is citizen engagement and what we can do to let folks know what we do and what the city staff do,” Reazin said.
Reazin said having a circle of people who know more about city happenings can help answer other residents’ questions and come to the commission with concerns.
