Spring is here, and Eudora is due for some seasonal cleaning.
That’s why the library is hosting Team Up to Clean Up — an event where residents partner up to pick up trash around their neighborhoods — from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Participating groups will then deposit the bagged trash at the library in exchange for a doughnut from LuLu’s Bakery and entrance into a raffle for gift certificates to local restaurants.
Each participant will be given a bag of supplies, including gloves, trash bags and hand sanitizer. Organizers Crystal Hinman and Jeannine Sample asked that each community member separate their bags into recycling and trash and avoid bringing trash from their homes.
Hinman and Sample, who are on the library staff, started the event five years ago with the goal of cleaning up trash around the city’s neighborhoods, parks and streets for Earth Day.
Hinman said participants are usually high schoolers or Boy Scouts looking to get service hours, local church groups or families. Last year, 100 people participated in the trash cleanup.
She said the event is a positive experience for everyone in the community whether they participate or not.
“It helps everyone take time to clean up the great area around us,” she said. “It’s nice to work together to keep our community clean.”
This year, Hinman said she hopes to unite the community to help each other, have fun and hopes to get a great turnout.
“Everybody wants to get outside now that it’s spring,” she said. “And there’s lots of trash around the town, especially after winter. So this is really just a way for the community to team up to help each other clean up.”
