The disc golf course will be between the middle school and high school.
A new 9-hole disc golf course will soon make its debut at Eudora Middle School.
The Eudora Soaring Cardinals Disc Golf Course is set to open April 14, weather permitting. It will be for school and public use.
The Eudora Schools partnered with the Schools Foundation and Parks and Recreation to make the course a possibility. They received a $5,000 community grant from the Douglas County Community Foundation.
“It’s a true partnership amongst everyone, the community and us,” said Lauri Kuntz, Eudora Schools Foundation program coordinator.
The course will wrap around the middle school. Many of the holes will be centered between the middle school and the high school, making it easy to utilize for both.
“You’ve got the park, the pavilion, a place the whole family can come,” Kuntz said. “It’s just set up to be a perfect opportunity for not only the school but the city and our community to be able to work together.”
There is only one other disc golf course in Eudora, but it brings in residents and nonresidents alike.
“We’ve noticed it’s grown in popularity. There’s the one on the north side of K-10 that’s always packed,” Superintendent Stu Moeckel said. “This will be a great opportunity for those that want to drive here as well as the families who live on the south side of K-10.”
Middle School Principal Jeremy Thomas has worked with physical education teacher Mitch Tegtmeier for years to receive a grant for the course.
“We have this large area of land, so it’s just been: Why can’t we have our own course?” Thomas said.
The high school has a disc golf club and the middle school has a unit over it. Tegtmeier has previously taken his classes to the other disc golf course.
“It’s not as expensive as regular golf. It doesn’t take a lot of people. It’s a true lifetime sport. You get a disc and you can play,” Moeckel said.
The course will use UDisc, an app that shows the location of the course as well as the hours. It will be free for use but unavailable for the public during school hours.
On school days, it will be open from 3:30 p.m. to dusk.
On weekends and during the summer, the hours are 7 a.m. to dusk.
