The high school hosted a Math Madness event Friday night. Students and families had the chance to explore 16 stations and fill out a bracket on their favorite six.
Matt Peterie was happy to attend the event with his daughter, Grace. “I knew there’d be fun games and the kids would have a good time and they’d get to meet people who use math for a living,” he said.
“I think it’s a good thing for our school. It teaches kids to be more involved,” sophomore Isabella Luchsinger-Cuevas said. She and Kadan Naff attended the event for extra credit.
The various math games had many working together to solve. High school math teacher MaryJo Swann helped organize the event with fourth grade teacher Jennifer Decker.
Helpers were located at every table to assist math-solvers. “We know that in general math has a negative connotation around it for a lot of kiddos and families and we wanted to start to work against that,” Swann said. “We know that math is accessible to everyone and everyone uses it. It’s in so many different areas so we know it’s incredibly important. We want people to see the joy in it and have fun with it. Especially as a district. We love doing things as a community.”

The tessellation coloring sheets were station 16 on the auditorium stage.
At station two, students learn about financial literacy. After participants turned in their bracket choices, they were entered to win a Parks and Rec pass. Math Games won the bracket.
