The Eudora High School cheer team keeps energy high during the boys basketball sub-state game Friday night.
The cheerleading team is ready to head to state to cheer on the Cardinals.
The cheer team aims to elevate the excitement at games and works together to stir up the crowd and intimidate the opponent.
“We like to use all-around cheers. The student section and our parents can join in fast,” senior Trinity Stickley said.
The cheerleaders work hard to break any silence in the gym by cheering on the Cardinals and calling cheers that grab the crowd’s attention.
“We really like to interact with the crowd and get in their faces,” senior Jolie McWhirt said.
The girls have been working on new pyramid formations for the state tournament to perform during time-outs. They also created signs for the sub-state games that will be brought to the state game, said coach Corinne Dunn.
When the game gets close, they call their “let’s get fired up” cheer, which involves the student section. The cheerleaders go onto the court during timeout and chant at the student section and they repeat back to them, Stickley said.
“It’s very community-involved,” senior Mia Schuck said.
Knowing the game and when to call cheers, whether the team is on offense or defense, is the key to keeping energy levels high during the game, McWhirt said.
It’s important that the cheer team stays smiling and interacts with the crowd during games, McWhirt said.
“We really stay positive and encourage each other and the crowd,” Stickley said.
The high school hosted a send-off Wednesday morning for the boys basketball team. See photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
The Cardinals play at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Baldwin City in Salina.
