Story Updated 2:13 p.m.
A fire broke out in the attic in a home in the block of 1300 Locust early Wednesday morning.
Dispatch received a call at 5:56 a.m. from the residence reporting smoke coming out of a vent fan in the bathroom. As they were on the phone with dispatch, smoke alarms started going off.
Interim Fire Chief Chris Hull arrived at the scene at 6:04 a.m., and the first engine arrived at 6:16 a.m. The fire was under control at 6:27 a.m., Hull said.
The residents had evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Hull said nothing was considered suspicious about the fire at this time. As part of standard protocol, the state fire marshal will send in an investigator.
The fire was contained to the attic, and smoke and fire damage to the property is limited, Hull said. Any damaged personal property was mostly from water or drywall that was pulled to keep the fire under control.
Hull noted that there were working smoke alarms in the home, and were a key component in alerting the family there was a problem.
Six people living in the rental home have been displaced and are currently receiving shelter from 1-800-BOARDUP in the meantime.
The home at 1329 Locust is owned by Mark Grosdidier, who owns rentals throughout town.
Grosdidier said he received a call from the occupants when the fire broke out.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Grossdidier had helped the residents find another Eudora rental to move into. He said the family is packing and will move into the home later tonight.
The house has some smoke and water damage but the fire damage was limited to the attic, he said.
He said after insurance has seen the house, he will begin the clean-up and repair process.
