The Cardinals trounced Bonner Springs 54-8 Friday with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, helping them reset after last week’s season opening loss.
The team started strong, scoring a touchdown on their first offensive snap as sophomore Grayson Moody reeled off a 39-yard touchdown run. They didn’t look back all night, with Moody nabbing three touchdowns in the first half.
“We just played hard,” Moody said. “Our coach told us at halftime, ‘Pretend it’s 0-0, and get back out there on the ball.’”
Senior Braeden VanDonge and junior Leland Bradshaw led the team on both sides of the ball. Midway through the second half, VanDonge picked off the Bonner Springs quarterback and weaved through defenders on his way to the endzone.
He said it was great to get the bounce back win in the team’s second game.
“First week was a really tough game,” he said. “And having this game to bounce back, you know, get our confidence back, I think it was a great win.”
Bradshaw said the Cardinals will use the win to help prepare for next week’s road showdown at Spring Hill.
“Never give up, no matter what,” he said. “Even if you’re up, always play your heart out.”
Head coach Drew Steffen said the win showed the emotions and unity the team can play with.
“It’s fun to coach them every day,” he said. “They get after it, and then they buy into the things that we want to do. And I’m proud of them for that.”
