Residents who had property damaged as a result of the recent power outages will need to file with their own insurance, the city said in a statement Wednesday.
The city said as an electric utility regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission and based on the state tort claims act, the city is not liable in situations like these when failures cause property damage or equipment failure that aren’t the fault of the city.
The cause of the voltage drops between Sept. 11 and Sept. 20 was determined to be with an Evergy transformer, not repairs made to the city’s distribution system, Evergy said in a recent statement.
“When notified of the issues impacting Eudora, Evergy responded and addressed the issue in a timely manner,” the Evergy statement said.
The city regrets any inconvenience and can provide documentation to assist with residents’ homeowners insurance claims, the statement said. Those impacted wanting documentation can call City Hall at 785-542-2153.
