A work session to further discuss staffing needs for the fire department will take place before the regular business items at Monday’s City Commission meeting.
After commissioners discussed whether or not to apply for a SAFER Grant through FEMA at the last meeting, many felt they needed more information about the financials of the situation. The conversation was brought on as commissioners discussed future needs as the city grows.
Commissioners worried that hiring full-time staff for the station would present a funding issue for the city once the three years of grant funding goes away.
Fire Chief Mindy Andrasevits has previously spoken about the need for full-time firefighters.
During the discussion led by City Manager Kevyn Gero, she said the department has struggled to fill shifts with volunteer and part-time firefighters. As the city grows and they weigh the potential for a mixed-use development, Gero said it may be time to consider full-time firefighters for faster response times.
The fire department is also currently working on a new strategic plan to help plan for future changes.
The commission’s original discussion took place during the work session portion of the meeting, which followed all regular business items.
This work session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Any action needed as a result will be taken during the regular meeting business items.
The commission will also consider an ordinance to annex property at 1278 E. 2200 Road, which was recently recommended by the Planning Commission.
It will also consider a proclamation for Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall. It can also be accessed by Zoom via information on the city’s posted agenda.
