As outbreaks of tuberculosis continue in both Johnson and Wyandotte counties, Lawrence-Douglas Public Health announced there is no outbreak in Douglas at this time.
There are no active cases in Lawrence or in the county, the department said in a press release Wednesday. The risk of contracting the illness for the general public is low.
Someone with active tuberculosis is no longer infectious to others shortly after beginning treatment. A person with latent tuberculosis (inactive infection) is not infectious and cannot spread it to others. While anyone can get it, only those who have repeated, long-term exposure to a person with an active infection are at risk. This could be someone you work, attend school or live with, the release said.
Tuberculosis is spread through the air from an infectious person to others. It is not spread through touch or walking past someone with an infection.
If you believe you have been exposed to someone with active tuberculosis, contact your primary health care provider.
