Parks and Rec Director Sally Pennington has received one of the most prestigious honors for parks and rec professionals.
Pennington received the certified parks and recreation executive certification. This places her among the top parks and rec professionals in the country. It is a distinction only held by 400 nationwide, and only 11 in Kansas.
The award comes from the National Recreation and Park Association and recognizes expertise in management, strategic planning and community impact. The certification requires advanced education, significant leadership experience and passing a rigorous national exam.
Pennington has worked for the city for over five years, and has spent 15 years in parks and recreation. Under her leadership, the department has expanded programming, improved park amenities and strengthened partnerships to enhance recreation for all ages, the city said in a press release.
