Junior Cardinals golfer Joellen Vogt is on her way back to the state golf tournament after placing third at regionals.
This will be the third time Vogt has qualified for state after shooting an 82 on Monday. Vogt said she got off to a rough start, but kept her head up to finish stronger than she started.
“I feel pretty good about it,” she said about qualifying for state. “I went into today not knowing because I knew there were better girls this year than there was last year, so I wasn’t sure how today was going to go. But after I saw the scores and how I finished, I felt pretty confident and it gave me high hopes for state this year.”
Senior Brooklyn Thorne finished in the top 25 by placing 24th.
The team placed fifth overall among nine teams, so they did not qualify for the state tournament. They missed the cut by just 18 strokes. Head coach Susan DeVoe said while the team improved from last year, they were still disappointed about missing the cut.
“It’s improvement, but we need to keep improving,” DeVoe said. “We can make up 18 strokes. So, the girls we have returning for next year need to stay excited about it and next year it will happen.”
DeVoe said she hopes members of the team will take more time during the spring and summer to practice so they continue to improve.
Vogt will play in the state tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Her tee time is yet to be announced.
