Julie Skinner opened JS Wellness in hopes of making her patients feel heard while helping them take preventative measures for their health and wellness.
“A lot of times patients don’t feel heard. They don’t know, ‘is this safe? is this ethical?’” Skinner said. “If you really listen to people and hear them out, a lot of times they’ll guide you to what they really need, and I like to partner with my patients more to listen to them.”
JS Wellness, which fully opened in July in the same building as Eudora Eye Care, provides Botox, filler, microneedling, hormone balancing injections and medical weight loss injections.
Skinner has worked in health care for over 20 years. She started her career after receiving a nurse practitioner degree from AdventHealth University in Florida. Julie worked in different hospitals as a nurse in surgical, pre-surgery and recovering, radiology and pain management before deciding to switch gears.
“Health and wellness is always more – prevention, health and wellness – is always more my focus versus treating sickness,” Skinner said.
By starting her own business, she is able to provide a more personal connection with her patients while cutting back on some of the long hours.
“A lot of times in the hospital it’s you kind of almost never get to put it away,” she said.
JS Wellness allows her to focus on treating and keeping people healthy, which is much different than helping cure illness in the hospital.
By bringing the business to Eudora, she is able to support a small local city and bring new services to town, she said. Skinner is the sole provider, but she may expand in the future depending how business goes.
“I love connecting with patients, getting to know people and just helping them to feel their best self and so whether I stay small or whether I grow bigger, time will tell,” Skinner said.
She and her husband, Mike, moved to Linwood about four years ago when he got a job in the area. He also works in health carefor AdventHealth and helps with the business side of JS Wellness.
Mark McBride received services at JS Wellness after a friend recommended it. McBride said his experience was comforting and relieved some of the usual anxieties he has about going to a doctor.
McBride started hormone therapy to treat low testosterone due to age. He said he would continue to regularly see her for follow-ups and lab work.
“I live in Lawrence, but I am willing to go to Eudora to see her,” McBride said. “She’s just so receptive and comforting.”
Alicia Conway also comes from Lawrence to see Skinnerfor Botox injections. It’s been a great change to her life to meet Skinnerand receive her services, she said.
“The Botox is great because it keeps things from progressing. it’s an easy way to do upkeep for me that I don’t have to think about every day, and it’s just that little tweak that I need that makes me feel better,” Conway said. “It’s been a great change in my life to have met her and be a part of her service.”
If a patient is interested in hormone balancing or weight loss, the first appointment will be a consultation. For aesthetic inquiries, patients may be able to receive services at their first appointment.
