The new Kansas license plate will not move forward after an uproar from residents over the design.
The plate unveiled last week will be halted from production, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Tuesday morning. Instead, there will be a public input process before selecting a final design.
“I promised to be a bipartisan governor, and I think we can all admit – I succeeded at bringing Kansans across the political aisle together in disliking this new license plate,” Kelly said in a statement. “I’ve heard you loud and clear. Elected officials should be responsive to their constituents, which is why we are adjusting the process so Kansans can provide direct input on our state’s next license plate.”
The Eudora Times Facebook page received over 300 comments about the proposed design, with most of them overwhelmingly against it.
“Well that is dull. All the talented artists in Kansas and we get this? Do better, please,” Shayla Williby wrote.
“Terrible and very generic ..where’s the wheat and sunflowers??” Patty Vigneron wrote.
Others criticized that the plate looked like Mizzou’s colors.
“I may have to purchase a specialty license plate at that rate. These are Missouri colors! Boo!!,” Lorie Sawyer said.
“All that gold and not a single sunflower in the design? and why in the world would they choose Mizzou’s colors? 🤷🏻♀️ We should have had choices and a vote, LOL! 🤣” Deb Kummer wrote.
More information on how to vote on new options will come soon from the governor’s office.
