Senior Mason Cox was laser focused on the mound during senior night against Baldwin.
“I was really locked in with it being senior night since you only get one of those,” Cox said. “I wanted to enjoy it with my other seniors and teammates.”
Cox struck out seven batters, gave up three walks, three hits and two runs in six innings of work en route to picking up his first win on the mound this season. The team won their first game of the year 8-2.
“He’s a fighter,” head coach Sean Jarvis said about Cox. “He’s a good kid,and it was great to see him perform the way he did. Hopefully he has a few more outings like that to finish off the year.”
Cox was honored with fellow seniors Sam Giffin and Kevin Whitten.
“It’s always awesome getting wins for these guys,” Jarvis said. “It’s been a tough year so far, but they’ve been battling every day.”
Junior Kaden Kerr set the tempo early with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning.
“I was playing for the seniors,” Kerr said. “To make sure they got a win on senior night.”
He would come around to score two batters later with an RBI single from freshman Ryan Cox.
The Cardinals would add two more in the second inning with RBI singles from juniors Owen Wilks and Kelton Ford.
Cox would contribute to the scoring in the third inning with a sacrifice fly out to the outfield to bring home sophomore Caden Stedry, who reached base with a single.
Kerr would score again in the fourth inning after reaching base via an error by the Baldwin shortstop. He scored when freshman shortstop Jack Cline hit an RBI single.
In what would be their final chance at the plate, the Cardinals scored three more runs with two outs in the inning before the game was called off. Ford added another RBI single to his boxscore and Kerr busted the game wide open with a two-run double.
Jarvis was very pleased with his team’s effort on the field.
“Lots of good stuff on the field,” Jarvis said. “The energy level from the guys tonight was great.”
The record is now 1-7. The boys will be back in action Tuesday night on the road against Baldwin with first pitch at 6:15.
